One of the most important milestones in a transgender person's life is having their identification documents match their gender identity and expression. Until now, many attorneys in Texas have charged anywhere upwards of $3,000 just to have a person's name and gender marker legally changed! We've decided this cannot continue, and access to name and gender marker changes should be available to ALL who need it; not just to those who can afford it.
About the Program
Anyone who lives in Texas may participate. The total cost $1,000, which includes all court costs, filing fees, document preparation, arranging a court date, attendance at court with you, and getting certified copies of the order changing your name and/or gender marker.
If you're unable to pay the filing fee (e.g. you receive governmental assistance), we provide you an affidavit to complaint to have the filing fee waived. Keep in mind, though, you will still need to pay for the fingerprint card and the administrative fee of $700, which can be paid by cash, check, or credit/debit card.
How to Participate
We've put together a short, easy-to-read packet for folks who would like to participate. It provides an introductory letter, a questionarre, an affidavit, and a checklist for you to make sure you have everything ready. It's our hope the process will be fast, easy to follow, and will minimize any disruption in your life.
Once you complete your packet, send it to us and we'll take care of everything else, and call you to schedule a court date. On the day of the court appearance (which is typically a month after you submit your packet), we invite you and your family/friends to accompany you to the courthouse and make everything official! The court appearance will be in downtown San Antonio, so if you live out of town, we can help make travel arrangements.
